MOTQ: Betty Connolly

Q: When did you first hear about CrossFit and how did you get started?

I had just turned 50 years old and lost over 50 pounds.  I was working with a personal trainer but was not seeing the results I wanted.  There was an add on Facebook for a 6-week challenge at a CrossFit gym, I felt like I had nothing to lose so I signed up, and here I am 7 years later still at it 5 days a week!

Q: Why did you stick with it?

There are so many reasons why I have stuck with it, one of the biggest is the community.  Some of my best friends are people I have met doing CrossFit.  I also love how I don’t have to think about what I am going to do when I go the gym every day, I just need to show up and there is a challenging workout waiting for me!

Q: What do you enjoy most about Bell City CrossFit?

The Coaches and services at Bell City are the best, top notch!  It is so nice having a Nutritionist, Physical Therapist and Massage Therapist all available to me under the same roof.  I have used the services of all three.

With being a bit older than the average CrossFitter, I have a few more limitations due to worn out body parts. ;)  Having this additional support on hand makes life much easier with my busy schedule, I can take care of all my needs in one place.  The staff at Bell City cares about each individual, helping us modify workouts to accommodate our injuries or limitations and making us all feel like we belong.

Q: Most and least favorite lift?

Well my most favorite is easy, Deadlift of course!  I remember 7 years ago I lifted 125 pounds and thought that was so heavy.  My 1 rep max now is 275 pounds, more than double!  Least favorite is hard, I really like them all.  I would have to say Overhead Squat only because it is the most difficult for me with my shoulder restrictions, but I still like it and do it, just not as heavy as I would like to.

Q. What do you train for?

I train to keep myself healthy, both physically and mentally.  I want to be around to enjoy my grandchildren for many more years.

Q: What is your greatest CrossFit success story?

Completing 3 Spartan races along with a few other running/obstacle courses. If you told me I was going to do that 10 years ago I would have said you were crazy!

Q: What do you do for work?

I work in IT Finance at Cigna supporting the Membership Projection Process.

Q: What do you do for fun with you’re not at the gym?

I love spending time with my kids/grandkids (granddaughter and step grandson).  I enjoy traveling to new places and trying different foods (why I need to work out 5 days a week!).  The next two new things I will be focusing on is getting my pistol permit and taking up photography.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in CrossFit, but not sure it’s the right fit for them?

Don’t be afraid to try it, everything is scalable.  In a short time, you will be surprise how much you improve and what you thought was impossible will become a daily workout for you!

Q: Favorite breakfast meal?

Steel cut oatmeal, an over easy egg, avocado, dash of olive oil, all in one bowl!

Congratulations Betty, and thank you for sharing your story!

When you see Betty at Bell City, be sure to give her a high-five and congratulate her!!!
