2019 CrossFit Open Recap

This year's 2019 CrossFit Open saw the first ever Bell City CrossFit Intramural Teams, with close to 40 people signed up and taking part! There were 3 teams of 12/13 people, each with their own team name, shirt and mascots to cheer their teams on. The weekly write-ups, written by Coach MeLo are captured here for reference, amusement and bragging rights...

Week 1

Workout 19.1

Complete as many rounds as possible in 15 minutes of: 19 wall-ball shots 19-cal. row

This Just In: Bell City CrossFit Intramural Team Rankings:

After Week 1 of the CrossFit Open, Team Aggressively Average holds the top spot proving themselves decidedly “above” average. Anchored by top performances from Ashley (1st place, women) and Brandon (2nd place finish, men), they narrowly defeated The Bar-Barians winning by a margin of less than 1 point.

Only 1.2 points separate the current leaders from the 3rd place Winos, Whiners & Winners; who may have prioritized wine and whining over winning this week. When asked about her team’s first week’s performance, team captain, Jackie slurred, “This contest is far from over.”

Great work, Bell City CrossFit. We are officially 38 people STRONG in the Open, and you all put in some HARD work during 19.1. Looking forward to seeing what we get to do this week!

Week 2

Workout 19.2

Beginning on an 8-minute clock, complete as many reps as possible of:   25 toes-to-bars   50 double-unders   15 squat cleans   25 toes-to-bars   50 double-unders   13 squat cleans If completed before 8 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:   25 toes-to-bars   50 double-unders   11 squat cleans If completed before 12 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:   25 toes-to-bars   50 double-unders   9 squat cleans If completed before 16 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:   25 toes-to-bars   50 double-unders   7 squat cleans

Stop at 20 minutes.

The results from week 2 are official, and once again, Team Aggressively Average is on the TOP of the BCCF Intramural leaderboard with an average ranking of 9.63 across the first two weeks of The Open.

Team Captain, Jackie reportedly had some stern conversations with her team over the past week about “cleaning up their act” and her team managed to outperform the other two teams in 19.2, but it wasn’t enough to pull ahead overall.

There were many highlights from week 2 including impressive performances from many athletes doing multiple Toes to Bar and Double Unders for the first time in a workout! Congratulations, everyone!

With 3 weeks to go, and less than 1 point separating first place Aggressively Average from last place Bar-Barians, this race is still way too close to call. We’ll have to see what Castro has in store for us this week!

Week 3

Workout 19.3

For time: 200-ft. dumbbell overhead lunge 50 dumbbell box step-ups 50 strict handstand push-ups 200-ft. handstand walk

Time cap: 10 minutes

Here we are, 3-weeks into the 2019 February Open and the results of the BCCF Intramural competition are in. 19.3 was all about big shoulders and bigger dumbbells and the Bar-Barians claimed the top spot for this event. Unfortunately, that performance wasn’t strong enough to break out of last place overall.

Most people RX'd this one, some using the 50/35# Dumbbells for the first time in a workout, others surprising themselves by doing a bunch of strict HSPUs! 38 people entered this competition and 38 people remain with only 2 weeks to go, nice work, BCCF!

Aggressively Average is holding tightly, but narrowly onto the top spot with a team average of 9.83, while the last place Bar-Barians are averaging 10.18; a margin of only 0.35 points. Winos are still resting comfortably in second place, “ready to pounce” (reported quote from Team Captain, Jackie).

Looking at the BCCF Men’s Leaderboard, the race for the top 3 spots is quite tight, with super consistent performances by Brandon (AA) in first place with 6 points (three 2nd place finishes), and Roland Jr (BB) in second with 7 points followed by Alex (WWW) with 8 points.

On the BCCF Women’s Leaderboard, the Winos hold the top 2 spots with Melissa in first place with 4 points and Carlie in second place with 9 points. 3rd place is a tie between Ashley (AA) and Danielle CA (BB) both with 11 points.

What will we see this week, folks? Snatches? Overhead Squats? Thrusters & Burpees? Muscle-Ups, anyone???

Keep up the strong work, Teams!

Week 4

Workout 19.4

For total time: 3 rounds of:   10 snatches   12 bar-facing burpees Then, rest 3 minutes before continuing with: 3 rounds of:   10 bar muscle-ups   12 bar-facing burpees

Time cap: 12 minutes

The results are in, and the MVP award in Week 4 decidedly goes to the 14-year old rookie, Ryan who managed to outperform all of the adults / “old people” handily in 19.4 by completing all 30 of the workout’s Bar Muscle Ups. An awesome display of bodyweight ninja’ry and burpee mastery earned him the top spot overall for the week and boosted him to 4th place overall on the BCCF “Men’s” Leaderboard.

Strong performances by the Bar-Barians in week 4 weren’t limited to the rookie. Roland Jr managed a 3rd place finish in the event on the Men’s side, while Becca completed 8 (!) Bar Muscle Ups to earn a 3rd place finish on the women’s side (overall and for the week). Erica first learned what a bar muscle up was, and then decided to do 6 of them in the workout to help her team dig out of 3rd place and work their way back up to SECOND.

This means that OVERALL, and for a 4th week in a row, Aggressively Average holds the TOP SPOT. True to their name, across the board AA performed above average with 50% of their team able to complete at least one muscle up and jump over that 66 rep hurdle (Brandon, John A, Dan, Danielle G, Ashley and Scott B).

Meanwhile, the Winos disappointingly were ousted from second place by a very narrow margin of only .02 points. The team’s captain was unavailable for comment, but rumor has it she’s hidden in a dark corner of a bar somewhere “strategizing” how to “right this sinking ship”.

Let’s give it up to all of our members who just joined the “Bar Muscle Up Club” and those that managed to throw those 95# and 65# barbells over their heads like it’s their job. Strong work, Bell City!

One more week to go…what will 19.5 hold? Thrusters? CrossFit Total? Can anyone oust AA off of their pedestal? Only time will tell…

Week 5

Workout 19.5

33-27-21-15-9 reps for time of: Barbell Thrusters Chest-to-bar pull-ups

Time cap: 20 minutes

And just like that, the 2019 February-March CrossFit Open has come to a close! Congratulations to everyone who participated. Thank you for registering, for your blood, sweat, tears (hands and otherwise…), for your support of others and of the Bell City Community. We witnessed a lot of firsts, awesome accomplishments and many exciting performances.

I’m excited to announce that Aggressively Average are Bell City’s first Intramural Open Champions! The race was close from the beginning, and in the end only 0.51 points separated AA from the third place Winos.

The Open affords us the opportunity to test out our training to see where we are relative to the rest of the CrossFit community, and relative to your past selves. Now is the time to reflect upon how the last 5 weeks have gone. Don’t forget to give yourself credit where credit is due. It’s easy to reflect solely on the negative, what you weren’t able to do, where you weren’t able to go as hard as you wanted; but let’s not forget about the success! Doing a bar muscle-up, (or several!!), doing a chest to bar pull-up (or many!!), throwing more weight overhead than you ever have! Let’s BUILD upon THAT positive momentum.

Now that this experience is fresh in your mind, what are your goals and how are you going to accomplish them? Write them down, or share them in the comments here. There is another Open in October this year, merely 6 months away. What are your goals for that Open? Make your goals SMART - specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely. Post them on the Goals board at the gym so we can hold you accountable, and most importantly, have a PLAN to accomplish them! Remember, “failing to plan is planning to fail”.

Need some guidance? Ask a coach, hit up Open Gym or post in this group for support.

Congratulations again, your effort has been inspiring! Treat yo’self, and let’s move FORWARD!
