Exercise and the Brain: How Fitness Impacts Learning

In this article, Nancy Barile (M.A. Ed.), reviews a book entitled, “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain” written by Dr. John J. Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Her review associates the benefits of exercise to her field of expertise, education.

Barile summarizes that,

"In short, not only does exercise help the brain get ready to learn but it actually makes retaining information easier.”

She continues,

"Physical activity has a "positive influence on memory, concentration, and classroom behavior.""

While we see these benefits in young and old alike, we turn our focus to our upcoming CrossFit Kids Spring Program where we introduce children to fitness and health at a young age and set the stage for a lifetime of healthy eating habits and exercise routines. This, in turn contributes to stress reduction, an improved ability to focus and manage anxiety. The benefits are immense and supported by evidence.
